A travel eSIM normally requires a carrier-unlocked device. eSIM compatibility and carrier unlock are separate: a phone can support eSIM technically but still reject profiles from another provider.

What a carrier lock does

A locked phone is restricted to the carrier that sold or financed it. Buying an eSIM, resetting network settings, or updating software does not remove that restriction.

Check iPhone status

Open Settings → General → About and review Carrier Lock or SIM Restrictions. “No SIM restrictions” usually indicates that the phone is unlocked. If another message appears, contact the home carrier.

Check an Android phone

Android wording varies and may not show a clear status. Ask the original carrier using the exact model and IMEI. A phone accepting another mobile profile can be evidence, but carrier confirmation is safer.

Resolve the lock before installing
