Can You Use GPS and Maps With a Data-Only eSIM?

Using GPS and maps with an EasyTripGo data-only eSIM

Yes. A data-only travel eSIM can provide the internet connection used by Google Maps, Apple Maps, and other navigation apps. The eSIM does not need a phone number for GPS positioning or map data.

What GPS does without mobile data

Your phone's location system can determine its position without a phone number. However, the map app may still need an internet connection to search for places, download new map areas, calculate updated routes, show public transport information, or provide live traffic.

Prepare maps before traveling

  • Download offline maps for your destination while connected to Wi-Fi.
  • Save the hotel address and other important places.
  • Take a screenshot of essential routes or booking details.
  • Allow the map app to use your location.
  • Bring a power bank, because continuous navigation can use significant battery.

Use EasyTripGo for map data

  1. Turn on the EasyTripGo eSIM.
  2. Select it as the mobile data line.
  3. Enable data roaming for that eSIM.
  4. Confirm that the map app is allowed to use mobile data.
  5. Turn Wi-Fi off briefly and load a new map area to test.

If the map shows your position but cannot search or load roads, GPS may be working while mobile data is not. Follow our eSIM no-internet checklist.

Remember the limits of a data-only plan

Most EasyTripGo travel plans provide data rather than a standard mobile number, voice calls, or SMS. Internet-based messaging and calling apps can work while the data connection is active. Learn more in our data-only eSIM and phone number guide.
