A VPN is optional when using a travel eSIM. It can encrypt traffic between your phone and the VPN provider, which is useful on untrusted Wi-Fi, but it does not make every website or app trustworthy.
Choose a trusted VPN
Use a reputable provider with clear privacy and security practices. Avoid unknown free VPN apps that may collect data or inject advertising. Install and test the app before travel rather than during an urgent connection problem.
Expect speed and location changes
A VPN adds another network route, so speeds may fall and the visible IP location may change. Some banks, streaming services and payment apps block VPN endpoints. Read why an eSIM IP location may look different.
Troubleshoot without deleting the eSIM
If mobile data stops working, temporarily disconnect the VPN and Private DNS, test one website, then reconnect. Do not delete the installed profile. Follow the full VPN and Private DNS troubleshooting guide.
Use the right connection for the task
Mobile data can be preferable to unknown public Wi-Fi for sensitive tasks. If a banking or streaming app still fails with the VPN off, the app may be reacting to a foreign network or IP address; see our banking and streaming app guide.
