A laptop connected to your phone's hotspot can use far more data than the phone appears to use by itself. The hotspot does not have a fixed consumption rate: operating-system updates, cloud synchronization, browser tabs, video calls, streaming, and other connected devices determine the total.
Check whether hotspot use is included
Some travel plans support tethering and others limit it. Read the specific product terms before relying on a hotspot for work. If the option will not connect, follow our hotspot troubleshooting guide.
Stop background laptop traffic
- Mark the hotspot connection as metered where your operating system offers that option.
- Pause system and app updates.
- Pause cloud-drive and photo synchronization.
- Close unused tabs, launchers, and communication apps.
- Disconnect other hotspot devices when they are not needed.
A metered setting helps reduce some background transfers, but it does not block everything. Confirm each important application's update and sync controls.
Use video calls carefully
Camera quality, screen sharing, group size, and call duration can make meetings data-heavy. Turn off incoming HD video or your camera when appropriate. If the connection is slow, see why a hotspot may be slower than the phone.
Track usage during the session
Note the remaining allowance before tethering, check again after a short work session, and use that result to plan the rest of the trip. Our data-checking guide explains the available methods.
