South Africa eSIM Installation and Hotspot Guide

Traveler setting up mobile connectivity with a phone and laptop at a South African airport

Most connection problems come from compatibility, installation timing or the wrong mobile-data line. Prepare before departure, keep the QR code private and retain the eSIM profile while troubleshooting.

What should you check before installation?

Confirm that the exact phone model and regional version support eSIM and that the device is carrier-unlocked. Connect to stable Wi-Fi and open the QR code on another screen. Follow the delivery email for installation timing and validity because plan rules can differ.

Do not test compatibility by deleting an existing profile. On a company-managed phone, security policy may block adding a new mobile plan even when the hardware supports eSIM. Ask the device administrator before purchase if the settings are restricted.

Review South Africa eSIM options and use the buying guide if you have not selected a plan.

How do you add and activate the eSIM?

On iPhone, open Settings, then Cellular or Mobile Data, choose Add eSIM and scan the QR code. On Android, look under SIM Manager, Connections or Network & internet, then choose Add eSIM or Download a SIM. Menu names vary. Label the new line “EasyTripGo South Africa.” After arrival, turn it on and select it for mobile data.

Our data guide helps match the allowance to a 7-, 15- or 30-day trip.

What if mobile data does not work?

Turn Wi-Fi off temporarily and confirm the correct data SIM is selected. Follow your email for Data Roaming and APN settings. Toggle Airplane Mode for 30 seconds, restart the phone and wait for network registration. Automatic selection should be tried first. Do not delete the eSIM or scan its QR code on a different phone without contacting support.

On dual-SIM phones, also check that “mobile data switching” has not returned data service to the home line. Keeping the home line available for calls can be useful, but its data roaming should remain disabled unless you deliberately want to use your carrier's roaming plan.

Signal can vary outside populated areas; check the coverage guide before remote travel.

Can you share data by hotspot?

Hotspot availability depends on the selected plan, phone and network conditions, so check the current plan terms. If allowed, open Personal Hotspot on iPhone or Hotspot/Tethering on Android, use a strong password and stop laptop updates and cloud backups. Every connected device uses the same allowance, and hotspot does not improve weak coverage.

For alternative connection choices, read the eSIM versus local SIM and roaming comparison.
