Should You Keep Your Primary SIM On or Off While Travelling?

Whether to keep a primary SIM on or off while using a travel eSIM

You can use EasyTripGo mobile data with your primary SIM either on or off. The best choice depends on whether you need your regular number for calls, SMS or verification codes and how much roaming risk you want to avoid.

Keep the primary SIM on if you need your number

Leave the home line enabled if you need to receive calls, SMS or OTP codes. Then apply these settings:

  • Select EasyTripGo as the mobile-data line.
  • Turn data roaming on for EasyTripGo.
  • Turn data roaming off for the primary SIM.
  • Disable automatic mobile-data switching.
  • Avoid answering, making or forwarding regular calls unless you understand your carrier’s roaming charges.

Receiving SMS can be free with some carriers, but this is not universal. Check your home carrier’s rules before travelling.

Turn the primary SIM off if you do not need it

Disabling the home line can reduce the risk of accidental roaming calls, SMS or data use. You will not receive regular calls, SMS or OTP codes on that number while the line is off. Internet messaging apps can still work through EasyTripGo data.

iPhone

Open Settings > Cellular or Mobile Data, tap the primary line and change Turn On This Line. To keep both lines active, return to Cellular Data, select EasyTripGo and turn off Allow Cellular Data Switching.

Samsung and Android

Open SIM manager or Settings > Network & internet > SIMs. Turn the primary line on or off as needed, then verify that EasyTripGo remains selected for mobile data.

Avoid unexpected charges

EasyTripGo does not control charges from your home carrier. Read how to avoid roaming charges on your primary SIM and how to receive OTP codes while travelling.
