App updates, cloud backups, photo syncing, video autoplay, and hotspot devices can use a large amount of travel data without an obvious download screen. Review these settings before departure if your plan has a fixed or daily high-speed allowance.
Set app updates to Wi-Fi only
Open the App Store or Google Play settings and disable automatic downloads over mobile data, or select Wi-Fi only. Menu names vary by operating-system version. Keep important travel and security apps updated before the trip rather than waiting until you are abroad.
Pause backups and photo syncing
- Set device backups to run only on Wi-Fi.
- Pause high-resolution photo and video uploads.
- Review cloud-drive synchronization.
- Check messaging apps that automatically download media.
- Disable podcast, music, and video downloads over mobile data.
Review streaming and social apps
Turn off video autoplay or choose a lower streaming quality. Short-video and social apps can consume data rapidly even when you are only scrolling. Download entertainment over Wi-Fi before traveling.
Check hotspot connections
A connected laptop or tablet may start software updates, backups, or file synchronization through your phone's hotspot. Disconnect devices you are not using and set the connected computer to a metered connection when available.
Use app-level controls
Both iPhone and Android allow you to restrict mobile data for individual apps. Keep navigation, transport, booking, authentication, and essential communication apps available. Our Low Data Mode and Data Saver guide explains how broader data-saving features affect apps.
