Video quality and viewing time are the main drivers of streaming data use. YouTube adapts quality to the connection and your settings, so there is no single amount for every video. Netflix publishes clearer estimates for its own service.
Netflix data estimates
Netflix states that its per-device data use can be up to approximately 0.3 GB per hour on Low, 0.7 GB on Medium, 1 GB for standard definition on High, 3 GB for HD, and 7 GB for 4K. These figures show why a few hours of high-quality viewing can consume an entire travel plan.
YouTube use also rises with quality
A longer video at 1080p or higher normally transfers far more data than a short clip at lower quality. Automatic mode may raise or lower quality as conditions change. Select a lower cellular quality manually when preserving data matters.
Download before departure
- Use trusted Wi-Fi to download permitted offline content.
- Choose standard rather than maximum download quality.
- Turn off autoplay.
- Avoid casting or streaming in HD on mobile data.
