Label the new line clearly, for example “Maldives travel.” You are adding a separate data service, not transferring your home telephone number. Avoid starting a number-transfer process that is unrelated to the supplied travel eSIM.
Select the travel line for mobile data
In the Maldives, turn on the installed line and select it for mobile data. Follow the supplied instructions for data roaming and APN configuration. Do not copy APN values from another product or choose a network just because it appears in a search.
Review automatic data switching and your home-line roaming settings so data uses the intended service. Your home provider's charges still apply to activity on that line. Test a webpage with Wi-Fi off before relying on the mobile connection away from your accommodation.
Turn on a hotspot
- Confirm that the phone itself has a working mobile-data connection.
- Enable Personal Hotspot or the equivalent Android feature.
- Set a strong password and connect your laptop or tablet.
- Pause unnecessary backups, updates and large downloads on connected devices.
- Monitor data consumption and battery level, then turn hotspot off when finished.
Hotspot devices share the same allowance as the phone. Unlimited's 1GB high-speed daily threshold is shared across all that traffic, followed by data at up to 5Mbps until the reset. Each connected device does not get a separate daily 1GB or guaranteed 5Mbps.
If several people need to use devices independently or move away from the hotspot phone, consider whether separate plans fit the trip better. A hotspot only works while devices remain within range of the phone and its connection is usable.
