How Much Data Does Google Maps Use While Traveling?

How much travel data Google Maps uses

Google Maps does not have one fixed data amount for every hour of use. Consumption changes with the map area, route updates, live traffic, searches, place photos, Street View, satellite imagery, and whether map data is already cached on the phone.

Navigation is only part of the total

Following a previously loaded route can be relatively light compared with repeatedly searching new areas, browsing many business photos, or using image-rich map layers. Rerouting and live information also require a connection.

Download offline maps before travel

  1. Connect to Wi-Fi and open Google Maps.
  2. Tap your profile picture and choose Offline maps.
  3. Select the destination area and download it.
  4. Update the download before departure if prompted.

Offline maps can reduce mobile data use and keep basic navigation available when coverage is weak. However, not every live feature or transport mode is available offline, so keep some mobile data available for current traffic, transit information, and new searches.

Prepare essential locations

Save your hotel, airport, stations, meeting points, and important addresses while on Wi-Fi. Take screenshots of critical booking details, but do not rely on a screenshot as your only navigation method.

Check actual use on your phone

iPhone and Android settings show cellular use by app. Reset or note the counter before a test day, then compare it afterward. See how to check remaining data and whether 1 GB may be enough.
