Video calls can use travel data quickly, but there is no single amount that applies to every meeting. The platform, camera resolution, number of participants, screen sharing, connection quality, and call duration all change how much is transferred.
Know what increases consumption
HD video normally uses more data than standard quality. Gallery views may receive several participant streams, while screen sharing can add another stream. Some apps automatically adapt quality when the network changes, so two calls of the same length may not use the same amount.
Reduce data before joining
- Disable HD video in the meeting app if the option is available.
- Join with your camera off when video is not necessary.
- Avoid virtual backgrounds and unnecessary screen sharing.
- Close cloud-sync and update tools before the call.
- Use dependable Wi-Fi for long or important meetings.
Measure one short test call
Note the phone's mobile-data counter before a ten-minute test using your normal meeting settings, then check it again afterward. Use that result to estimate a longer call. Phone and provider counters can differ slightly, so leave a safety margin.
Separate data limits from network quality
Buffering, frozen video, or broken audio can result from latency or weak signal even when data remains. See our video-call connection guide and high-latency guide. If tethering a laptop, also read the laptop hotspot data guide.
